When it comes to headpieces, it is
highly important that you try before you buy ... Selecting the right adornment can be the most awe-inspiring experience you ever encountered watching yourself transform into a fairytale vision, however, the wrong type of tiara can make your face appear in proportions which may not be flattering. Take very carefully into account the shape of your own face before selecting a piece.
Generally face shapes fall into different main categories. Some shapes are subtle while others are more defined, however on some people it is especially more noticeable than others, determine where you fall even if it is slight and then choose accordingly; you would not want a slim face to appear too thin or a round face to appear overly full and ample.
Remember that your choice may not necessarily be a tiara/diadem, your headpiece can fall into many categories including flowers, Whatever your choice, balance is the key to "Headpiece" success.
There
are six basic face shapes plus more which are very similar, some you will find are still very related to others only a softer or more angular version. for example: What works for an oval face, works for a diamond shape.
OVAL: Equal in length to one and a half times the width
ROUND: Generally balanced measurements
OBLONG: More length than width
HEART: Narrower at the jawline, wider from the cheekbones to the forehead
SQUARE: Generally balanced measurements but sharper and angular than the round
Round or Square Face The aim here is to slim the facial contours and make the face appear slightly longer. Select from styles with pointed or peak tops which will have an elongated effect.
Oblong Face Avoid peak tops which will make your face appear longer. Opt instead for styles which are uniform and even, flatter and lower, wreath fashions and flowers. Avoid a lot of height.
Oval or Diamond Face A good shape for V bands, Alice bands, back pieces, side flowers etc. Try to steer clear of height and pointed peaks which will make your face appear long. Flatter and lower styles are very complimentary.
Heart Shaped
This face shape is usually associated with a slightly pointed chin, compliment with different heights and elaborate layers in your design to concentrate on your cheekbone structure. Avoid peak top styles which will accentuate your face shape.
HEADPIECE TIPS
The golden rule of selection order is 1. Gown 2. Hairstyle 3.Tiara/veil
Remember the colour of your hair. Very light or very dark extremes in colour look great with sparkle and silver. Whereas the colours in between are a compliment to pearls and gold
Cool complexions are complimented by silver
Warm complexions are complimented by gold
Silver tones coordinate best with white, grey and blue tint gowns
Gold tones coordinate best with ivory and champagne tint gowns
If your hair is very thick it will look great with a very elaborate tiara
Silk floral wreaths compliment a flower detailed gown
If wearing a suit you can also decorate your hat with complimentary details
Don’t forget to coordinate with your jewellery as well as your gown eg. pearls to pearls, crystals to crystals etc.
Remember to bring your headpiece to your hairdresser
Avoid overpowering short hair with a large headpiece. Instead opt for something more subtle
Keep to scale with your body type, a tiny tiara on a plus-size bride is not proportionate or overshadowing a petite bride with a heavy crown.
This is only a guide. The success of your choice depends on you personally and your individual choices. For example if you have a champagne gown and dark hair you would fall into two separate groups, you would then have to see which is the most dominant; while dark hair is complimented by silver that does not mean it would not look good with gold.
