Choosing a wedding ring …   An extremely exciting part of your lifetime preparations;
a time to express your individuality, taste
and commitment.

Dating back to ancient times with recordings as early as Egypt and Rome, the wedding ring is a symbol of never-ending love; a perfect circle with no beginning and no end.  Wedding rings today are made of precious metals, gold, Silver, Platinum and even Titanium.

Your wedding ring is the symbol of your unity and will need to last a long time in addition to being admired, so you have to choose carefully.
There are points to consider:

Generally Ladies rings are at least 1mm narrower than the Gents
STYLES & LIFESTYLES
A growing trend is to wear wedding bands with a stone or stones set in but there are considerations to observe if selecting this option.  Gemstones add value to the ring but the stones can be fragile and difficult to look after if you have a lifestyle where your hands are constantly in detergent, gardening etc and you don’t always remember to take the ring off.  Diamonds are an extremely hard stone but can be expensive.
Then there are other lifestyle aspects such as the setting, heavy claws can catch on clothing, scratch you or others (especially if you have small children or are planning a family), scratch surfaces with smooth finishes (stainless steel) and even bend or distort with harsh wear.

In many cases a border setting would be more appropriate for everyday wear.

LADIES WEDDING RING
This is often a part where ladies find themselves in their element as they already usually have experience of jewellery or have seen pieces in magazines or other advertising and at least know what they want.  In addition Ladies would usually already have an engagement ring with which they would have to take into account when choosing a band.

  • Make sure your band compliments your ring as if they were made to sit together.
  • It is a good idea to buy a wedding set, although sometimes the proposal and the wedding are some time apart or a surprise.
  • Choose from both straight bands and curved fittings, sometimes a curved style is necessary for a correct seat around the engagement stone.
  • Match as close as possible with the band style of your engagement ring.
  • Match as close as possible with the band width of your engagement ring.
  • Decide if you want stones in your band.
  • Make sure the metals match.

GENTS WEDDING RING
Some men choose to wear a ring and some men don’t, but for those who do there are points to consider the same as for the ladies:

  • Most important of all “personality”.  Make sure your ring reflects who you are and the type of message you want to express about yourself.
  • Consider your trade.  Are you a labourer or tradesman?  Are you even allowed to wear a ring to work? What effect will your lifestyle have on your ring?
  • What width would you prefer and would suit your fingers?  Some men naturally have broader hands and bigger fingers than others but generally men’s wedding bands are broader than women’s.
  • Can your lifestyle enable you to include gemstones?  Manual labour is very hard on some stones, like Emeralds and Opals.

Matching wedding rings are a very romantic and endearing token of your love and commitment but will reduce your choice of style.
