Setting up a registry is easy but there are a few pointers to keep in mind to remember to ensure that it runs as smooth as possible.

• Register at up to three stores.  This gives you a wide range without the wide trek around too many shops.  In addition, thanks to modern technology you can also set up an online registry even with the same stores.
• Admittedly you will usually be advised to register as early as possible.  However, four to six months is adequate because not only do most people wait until the last minute to purchase gifts you may also find that the stock has changed between that year waiting period.
• Register together, the wedding is about both of you.
• Do not mention gifts in your invitation to guests, it is considered inappropriate.
• Register for gifts in various price ranges, so that your guests can choose what suits them at the time.  However, do not be afraid to include an item that may be a little pricey, often guest will pool together to purchase something really nice, in addition, the family will usually want to buy something a little more special.
• Ask about the stores merchandising policies, so that you are fully familiar with the handling of returns, exchanges, transport of goods etc.
• Remember to check if the registry is updated, just to make sure that purchased items are removed to reduce the risk of duplication.
• Acknowledge the gift; remember to send thank-you cards to all your guests.  This ensures that not only are you in appreciation but also that the gift arrived safely. 
  

  • Protocol dictates that:
  • Gifts received before the wedding should be replied within two weeks.
  • Gifts received during the wedding are replied up to three months after.

When building a registry remember to consider your whole home and your hobbies too in your selection of items.  This is a time to decide the things that you really need.  Your budget will be tight after the cost of the wedding and honeymoon, take this opportunity to build your personal world and at the same time allow your guests to give you something you will really appreciate and cherish.

• Consider all the rooms in your home and what kind of lifestyle you intend to have:
• Will you entertain … Do you have a large selection of glasses for different types of drinks?
• Do you need a selection of plates to accommodate your entertainment needs?
• Will you need more than the average amount of chairs?
• Do you have family or friends abroad who will be visiting?  Do you have enough linen, towels etc to accommodate this?
• Will you be taking your entertaining in the garden?  Do you need barbeque or patio accessories?
• What kind of style would you like to create for your home?
• What hobbies do you have?  Is there anything you need to enhance them?
• Do you like to cook, watch movies, listen to music?
