Reception Overview

The reception can be seen as a two-fold event, it gives the couple and their family an opportunity to say thank-you to the guests who attended and wished them well at the same time it enables the guests to congratulate, meet and express a few words to the couple on their special day.

The reception usually follows traditional protocols but feel free to adjust these to suit your personal needs.

The Receiving Line
In Barbados this is sometimes restricted to just the bride and groom, a chance to stand and greet each guest as they arrive for the reception.  However greeting lines sometimes include the entire wedding party and some of the family too.  If you feel that this process might be too tedious for your needs and those of your guests, by all means adjust it to your personal taste or change it altogether opting instead to making rounds and talking to each guest.  The choice is yours.
Cocktail Hour
A block of time after the ceremony which allows drinks and light refreshments to be served while pictures are taken and guest arrive to the reception.
Wedding breakfast / Dinner
The name used usually determines the time of day which the wedding service is performed.
You can choose to serve buffet style or formal full service.  The standard for buffet style is to allow guests to approach table by table to reduce a long queue and a tedious wait.  Either way the wedding party is always served first.
Speeches
When the meal is no longer being served, glasses are charged for the toasts to the couple.  Customarily with champagne or non alcoholic cider for those who do not drink.
Traditionally this role falls to particular people:
1.The Best Man
2.Father or Father-Giver
3.The Groom
But this can be adjusted to suit your needs; some modern couples are opting to include the bride, maid of honour even guests to speak a few short words if time permits.

Closing Events
  • Bride and Groom Dance
  • Cut the Cake

  • Throw the Garter (optional)
