The reception is equally as important as your ceremony, however simple or elaborate .

You need to compliment your wedding theme, through your reception, with the same zest and vigour which was displayed throughout your appearance and your ceremony. This way you will be able to express yourself and create an ambiance for your event

WHERE TO START

The most dominant feature of any reception is the food and all it entails:

  • Select and decide on a suitable caterer
  • Pinpoint which category/type your reception falls under
  • Decide on the kind and variety of food you will be serving including special diets
  • Decide on the type and category of drinks you will be serving including non-alcoholic
  • Select glasses plates etc
  • Select “Event Hire”.  Choose from a variety according to their quality and price range in conjunction with your budget
  • Find out all the prices and charges which will pertain and work out your budget accordingly to avoid costly mistakes or misinterpretation
  • Consider the venue
THE VENUE
  • Narrow down your choices to a few and then select the property you favour most.  It is unwise to go with the first place you see.  Give yourself options even if you end up returning to the first at least you know it was the best choice and that you made the right decision not the only decision
  • Enquire as to if its capacity will be suitable for your needs
  • Make sure there is adequate parking
  • Ask about previous events and view pictures if possible
  • Ask about the duration of time, how long can you hold your event
  • Find out if there are any extras included and organise them to suit because this may effect your caterer (plates, warmers etc) your drinks and your décor
  • Ask if there are any decorating restrictions and work within their perimeter.
  • Inform your florist of any such stipulations or restrictions in decorating and discuss together with them your ideas for your reception
  • Discuss charges and any extras involved in the fees so that you are both in complete agreement and understanding

TIPS
When selecting a reception venue consider the atmosphere as well as the look.  Is it relaxed? Are the staffs cordial and friendly?  Ask yourself if management seem interested in your event with a reasonable amount of enthusiasm?  All these factors will have an effect on the finished presentation. You will need a decorator, enquire if the venue is accustomed to using their selection or if you will be able to provide your own choice.  Allow your photographer to view the venue beforehand so he/she can plan the best photo strategy for your benefit.  You will need music. Make sure you are fully versed with all the protocols necessary, for the particular venue, concerning all forms of entertainment.  It would be a good idea to hold a meeting for all those involved so they can coordinate their work

LEGAL
Make sure all your contractual obligations are protected and understood. If possible, seek legal advice before signing contracts and make sure all your ends are covered for liabilities as well as catastrophes.  Consider insurance and discuss it between you and your intended.
