Preserving Your gown
While your dreams are becoming reality, remember to consider your memories .
Even before the big event the gown needs to be cared for ... Then a beautiful vision can now progress to become a precious heirloom ...

The next step is to preserve it for future generations to view and enjoy.

For every bride the decision stands as to keep or not to keep her gown. For some the singular day was enough and for her own reasons, a bride may decide to sell or give away her gown. For others it becomes a lasting keepsake for the bride, one which she wants to hold onto. What ever you decide to do with your gown in the future, it is important to store it properly now, so that it looks good for the big day, retain its lasting beauty and be in a good condition for any plans you choose.
Preliminary Care
First to begin with, the preserving process starts even before you wear the garment; forget the plastic, nothing is more harmful to your gown than this type of covering.  It is important that the fabric be allowed to breath without condensation, this includes a dry storage area and preferably a cloth bag or covering.  After wearing it should be cleaned as soon as possible before stains that you cannot see (dust, perspiration etc) settle into the fibres.  Always have your gown treated professionally, the cleaning and preserving process is a specialised technique it is not advisable to try to do it yourself. Choose the service company you use with care.

Storage
After you gown has been treated, store it carefully,  not in a forgotten area of your home like the basement or back of the garage but rather in a fairly lived in section, where the temperature is comfortable and steady.  The garment should be inspected periodically and aired, always wash your hands before handling.  Your hands may be clean but how do you think finger prints are made, by natural moisture in the skin. It is best to wear white cotton or silk gloves when handling.
Maintenance

You can opt to store your gown in a box but please note, only an acid free box will work.  These can be obtained from craft shops or requested from the cleaning establishments.  However, please be advised that even in these boxes you still have to inspect the gown at intervals at least once a year, for the tropics. Depending on where it is stored the boxes tend to acidify over time and need replacing. Store the box flat and carry it flat, having it sealed does not secure preservation.

The key to sustaining preservation is same as sustaining life … breathing.  Remember that there are other components on your dress like beading and other trimmings which have to be considered too.  If hanging your gown always use padded hangers for cushioned support.  Metal provides no support for the shoulders, other hanging points or stress areas and can leave marks and stains.

Please note when handling your gown do everything gently to reduce the damage caused by rapid surges of light, air etc.
