MUSLIM WEDDING IN INDIA
THE INDIAN MUSLIM CEREMONY - This is a brief general guide ... Regions may vary.
A Muslim ceremony is very simple, in fact the bride does not even need to be present for the contract, in so long as she sends two representatives to the contract, also no religious officiator is required. However it is still a rich affair and divided into parts.
Two days before the wedding the bride is annointed with a paste of oils provided by the groom's family. At this stage her hands and feet are also painted with henna patterns . Muslim brides marry in white or also consider the traditional cherry red with gold thread details. The groom can wear a long white silk tunic and turban headdress with flowing tail.
Here is a brief breakdown of the ceremony:
The groom arrives first, with family and friends and has a sweetened drink with the brides brother or other male relative
Bride and groom are asked if they are content with the arrangement
Sermon
Praise of Allah for guidance and help
Confession of faith
Three verses of the Koran and prophetic saying
Exchange of vows
Prayer for the couple and their respective families
While it may be simple a Muslim wedding has strong spiritual significance, uniting together not only a man and a woman but also life-forces, families and futures.
According to Muslim tradition it is actually the groom’s family who search for a suitable bride and the bride is entitled to receive a dowry from the bridegroom (which has been agreed by the elders of the families) and also her wedding clothing from him or his family. The ceremony may take place at the bride's home or any general venue. A large tent (Shamiana) can also be erected.

*Please note that certain weddings of various faiths or types, may require another additional ceremony (register office will suffice), to make it legal in western society. Check with your officiator for confirmation.
