Non nationals and nationals alike wishing to be married in Barbados are made very welcome and the process is straightforward and easy.  As a naturally friendly people we embrace the commitment you are about to make to each other and want this to be as smooth and stress free as possible.

THE MINISTRY OF HOME AFFAIRS is where you can secure a license in Barbados; this is situated in Bridgetown, the capital of this beautiful island.  You can easily work all the legalities into your schedule as the Ministry practices a regular working week from Monday to Friday 8.30 A.M to 3.30 P.M.  However, please remember that this is a legal process, as a result only the couple involved can transact the formalities.

To save time and a wasted journey please remember that you will need certain documents and other requirements:

  • In the case of a divorced individual, the original or approved copy of the “Decree Absolute”.
  • Current passports and original or certified true copies of birth certificates.  In the case of using a birth certificate, remember to be able to produce a picture ID for verification.
  • In the case of a deceased former partner, the original or approved copy of the Marriage license and death certificate for the individual who has passed.
  • Residents /citizens (either one or both parties) are required to pay a fee of BDS $45.00 plus a $10.00 stamp.
    In the case of neither party being a citizen or resident of Barbados a fee is required in the respect of BDS $200.00 cash and in addition a  BDS $25.00 stamp.
  • Officiator letter … This is a letter from the person who will be conducting the wedding for you … a religious official, magistrate etcetera.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • If your certification is in another language approved translations must be provided, certified by a legal representative … However this does not include a JP.
  • It is against the law in Barbados for persons under 16 to be legally married.
  • For persons between the ages of 16 and 18 the statute requires the consent of both parents and that they are present at application, for verification.
  • Persons 18 years or older are considered adults, of free mind to marry if they wish.
