For your own peace of mind and to be comfortable, it is important to get your dress code right for attending something as important as a wedding ceremony.  Unfortunately, yet strangely enough, wedding invitations very rarely state the nature and style of the ceremony.
Some guidelines are:

  • The time of day, morning or evening.
  • The style and class of the invitations, elegant or casual presentation.
  • The location, obviously you would not dress the same for a church or hotel as you would for a beach or garden ceremony.

Luckily for us, Barbados has only one main temperature … Warm summer.  Even during the rainy season you are still guaranteed a fair amount of sunny days so you are free to look your best without having to worry about coats and warmth for outdoor weddings.  This is good news because in Barbados we like to dress and take a pride in dressing well for all occasions.

Morning indoor ... Ladies Tips
  • A dress made from a light fabric, made from quality material in a soft colour so as to keep cool.
  • Optional matching hat.
  • Semi-formal, mid to high healed, strappy shoes.
  • Stylish, skirt and blouse
  • Light coloured semi-formal suit (in Barbados we associate a dark business suit with office attire) with lace or other tasteful décor is very appropriate.
  • Dressy pants.
Morning Indoor ... Gents tips
  • A natural colour suit (remember the heat) beige, grey and similar work well.
  • Matching or coordinating shoes, shirt and tie.
  • Optional matching polo neck made from a light fabric.

Outdoor ... Ladies Tips
Outdoor ... Gents Tips
  • Choose skirts with fewer flounces, as the cool breeze might keep you busy with the folds.
  • Broader heeled shoe.  Spike heels easily sink into sand or earth.
  • Carry an umbrella, not just in case of rain.  In Barbados an umbrella doubles up as a sun parasol.
  • Use appropriate sunscreen.
  • Carry an optional shawl for when the sun goes down.
  • A suitable shirt and pants is acceptable for the more casual weddings.
  • A jacket and tie will be very uncomfortable in this setting.

Please note that wedding attire etiquette extends to those performing services e.g photographers, videographers etc. Ensure that your dress befits the occasion.
