A flower girl is a young member of a wedding party, a fairy-like extra to the bridesmaids, the forerunner in the wedding procession.
Her actions are very important … A symbol of the brides new path in life.

She has one main responsibility; to open the ceremony by walking in front of the bride.  While doing this she can either:

  • Scatter flower petals on the runway before the bride
  • Carry a bouquet of flowers
  • Hand flowers to the guests
  • Spread confetti

Choose a child who is old enough to walk fairly well but young enough that she is still child-like, typically between 5 and 9;  although children as young as 4 have done the job admirably; however very small children may need supervision or accompaniment. She can walk alone or made to look like a couple with the “Ring Bearer” who is usually a boy of around the same age.
You can have more than one flower girl.  This works particularly well for very formal weddings.

Rehearsals are important to make the youngster feel confident about her performance and familiarise herself for taking photos.

Remember that due to her age, certain concessions will have to be afforded for her as opposed to adults.  Ensure that she gets adequate sleep, periodic naps during rehearsals and allow for the fact that she will find it difficult to stand throughout the whole ceremony.

It is traditional for flower girls, ring bearers etc to be mainly young members of the families of either of the couple, nieces nephews, brother, sisters etc but you can choose outside the family to children of close friends or anyone who is special to you.

Remember to have a little patience with your flower girl; this is an exciting time for her too.
