Selecting a Veil

Dating back as far as Ancient times, veils come from an era in which most fables are set. However, today the veil is a symbol of the bride and the wedding itself, where the bride has the choice to wear or not to wear, to choose from a variety of styles and lengths and wether to cover her face or not.

The possibilities and combinations are endless, However, remember that your veil is not a standalone object, there are things to consider when selecting your veil.

  • Your Height
  • Your shoe heel height
  • The volume of your dress
  • The decor on your dress
  • Your hairstyle

Work with all these components together, to create a well-balanced and beautiful vision for your occasion.

The general rule is that if you are low in stature then you should go for a shorter veil so as not to swamp your look and if you are taller you can opt for a longer veil.  However the style of dress really has to be taken into consideration as well as your height, when choosing your veil, as along with your shoes it can make a great deal of difference.  For example: a sheath dress on a short slim bride, wearing very high heels would have a lengthening effect allowing for a longer veil; especially if it is gathered in the centre.  Also the positioning on the head can completely change the effect and shoulder covering of the veil.

Also consider the style and detail of your dress; you would not want to hide a fancy back detail or a waistline focal point.

In addition you may want to compliment your dress by including certain décor touches on your veil like beading or diamante.

It really is best to try on several styles and then make your selection or try on your gown and measure for length suitability:

  • Try to balance your veil with your dress length, Cathedral lengths look great with full Cathedral style gowns and are very romantic but are a lot of luxury to look after.  If you feel it will be difficult to control, you can opt for a shorter veil but try not to end it at the waistline if you have a ball gown style, opting for above or below for a more beautiful line.
  • Consider your hairstyle when trying, if you are wearing your hair up be sure to wear it up when you are selecting or down if so be the case.
  • Consider that the positioning can affect the length of your veil also the height of your shoe heels.
  • Narrow cuts create an appearance of slimness and height with less froth.
