Features & Embellishments

Do you want to have extra magic radiate
from your outfit?

Choosing a gown with features and embellishments will do just that, adding rich interest, texture and excitement to your gown; transforming a fairly simple design to a spectacular presentation.

The starting point however, is not to rely on your décor, the basis lies in choosing a gown cut which is flattering to your body and then the rest is like icing on a cake.

Features and embellishments are any focal point which adds extra interest to a gown.  It can be a hip detail, a waist detail or a cluster of embroidery or beadwork which adds additional charm to a gown or emphasises a beautiful part of your body which you are proud of, a narrow waist, slender hips etc; or you may just want a richer presentation to exemplify the feel of opulence.

There are a wide variety of methods available to achieve your goal, these can be purchased ready-made in the gown, or in some instances, (like embroidery or beading) added afterwards to enhance, personalise and flatter.

SAMPLES & TECHNIQUES
SWAROVSKI CRYSTALS
The beautiful, reflective magic of Austrian crystals, a luxurious finish which is used in high fashion and upmarket items, including Oscar and other red carpet gowns.  The cutting of the stones is achieved by a technique using expertise which was developed by Daniel Swarovski himself in the 19th century.  The beauty and uniqueness of these crystals is that each of the edges are identical and top quality allowing them to sparkle and glint more than usual; in addition these stones are so superior that regular settings can be used for them so they are excellent for your Tiara as well as your gown.
Available in brilliant colours which emulate real stones: Peridot, amethyst, Sapphires etc and crystal clear.
Easy to use as accessories, seeing that these crystals are also used for jewellery, hair clips, décor on shoes including bridal flip-flops etc.

DIAMANTES
Also called rhinestones, these artificial diamonds are made of acrylic, rock crystal or glass, with a customary foil to the back to enhance the shine and reflect light.  They can be drilled and sunk into a setting, claw set, sewn or sometimes glued.  For bridal wear the flat back variety which is sewed on is best.  If you are planning on passing your gown on by either selling or to a family member or friend, glued diamantes will not wear well.  The glue will discolour a light gown, has a poor lifespan and certainly does not react too well to dry cleaning fluids.  If you are going to use the claw set style, ensure that the gown has a backing behind the lower folded clamps, to ensure no scratches to the body.  Diamantes can also add an extra sparkle to a corsage.
APPLIQUES
These are often found on pre-made, decorated gowns but are an excellent choice for a lady who wants to add glitz to a simple gown.  An appliqué is an already manufactured swatch of intricate, beading, embroidery or other embellishment which is sold as is, to be sewn on an already existing garment or fabric.  They are very exciting as they can cover a large area in a very bold manner or add just a simple touch to a shoulder, a neckline etc.

EMBROIDERY
A popular technique which can be used on its own or blended with beading to create a luxurious presentation.  Be adventurous with embroidery, remember that you do not have to restrict this beautiful texture to your gown; you can also add richness and complete your presentation by echoing features onto your veil through the use of embroidery.  Do not be afraid to ask the shop assistant for help, sometimes a matching embroidered veil comes ready-made.

RUCHING/PLEATING/DRAPES
Ruching and pleating adds texture and interest by soft draping, gathers or folds, from defined creases to knife pleats on fan cuts.
Drapes can be slightly nostalgic with a Grecian look and feel.  Strong pleating with high definition adds edge to gown in a very tasteful way and encourages a more adventurous cut (on the bias) which will promote more movement and flow to your gown.

BUGLE BEADS
Made from glass cane which has been cut, these beads have a high flash and flicker making them exquisite for your wedding gown.  Long, small and cylindrical they add sparkling interest in many finishes including twisted texture, iridescent tones and metallic.  Beach brides can enjoy ballerina and flip-flop sandals decorated with accents of bugle beads to add shimmer to their presentation.  Do-it-yourself enthusiasts will find bugle beads very easy to string.

ARTIFICIAL FLOWERS
Roses and other imitation flowers add a soft, romantic touch to a gown.  They can be a focal point to an otherwise fairly simple dress allowing you to keep your lines smooth and simple, or be a means by which you infuse colour into your presentation.  If adding the flowers yourself keep it tasteful and be careful not to overdo it.
