This kind of gown is basically a wedding dress of or with colour.

Of course a solid white, ivory, champagne or similar toned gown will still invoke the “wow” factor due to cut, style or volume but the dramatic gown ranging from light infusions of colour, to bold blocks, to total deep tones, adds extra enchantment due to the fact that they are stepping out of the usual.

Brides who like the idea of this type of look but are still traditionalists can opt to go somewhere in between either with lighter tones or the addition of just a touch of colour in selected places.

Whatever you choose, it can be very meaningful, representing maybe a favourite personal colour or one which has special significance to you as a couple. This look can also enable you to further emphasise a wedding theme or specific cultural tradition.

Here are a few tips to consider if you are contemplating wearing a dramatic gown for your wedding:
  • Make sure that if you are marrying a man of another culture or religion, that the colour you select is not offensive or bad luck in his country.  There are certain colours which may seem beautiful and perfectly harmless to you but might have deep meaning in another culture.  Remember that you also have to consider the feelings of the groom’s parents and their guests.
  • Consider your mother, she may have had her dreams of her daughter walking up the aisle in white and you don’t want to disappoint her either.  You can always compromise by adding just a touch of colour or keeping the hue light so that you don’t make too bold a statement.
  • Keep in mind that you will have to inform your florist of your intention to wear a gown of colour, so that adequate preparations can be made for you.  Depending on the shade, planning will have to take place to select the right blooms to bring out your dress without overshadowing it.
  • Decide how much your gown colour choice will influence your general theme and décor.  Some brides who wear dramatically toned gowns choose not to echo the colour at all, selecting a total contrast so that they stand out more.  Alternatively you can pick up on a shade within the dress (embroidery etc) or you can compliment with a shade lighter or darker.

For the very adventurous, a dramatically coloured gown does not have to be plain; you can play with patterns and textures, choose to be as lively as you want.  The tropical Barbados weather affords you to be more exploratory with all considerations including tie-dye.
COORDINATING WITH YOUR PARTY

Decide with your fiancé, how much your use of this gown will affect or influence his outfit.

The groom can be successfully incorporated into the theme whilst still keeping his own personality; sometimes a touch in the neck wear, boutonnière or other is all that is necessary to tie the whole thing together.

Consider the effect it will have on your bridal party.  You can pick up on another shade of the same, echo a colour of embellishment/embroidery or use contrasting or complimentary tones for them.
