A little knowledge goes a long way in helping you to prepare for your special day in whatever way you choose to celebrate it.  In Barbados you will come across many different ways to celebrate due to respect for our residents and visitors from overseas. There are different expectations for various ceremonies and also for civil procedures.
A religious ceremony is a very popular and spiritual way to get married.  To some it is the ultimate way, to have your marriage blessed in the eyes of God.

ANGLICAN / PROTESTANT WEDDING

THE ANGLICAN / PROTESTANT CEREMONY - This is a brief general guide ... Regions may vary.

These ceremonies are similar but with a rather wide range of differences due to the various religious practices which all fall under the protestant faith, e.g. Baptist, Presbyterian etc.   Therefore the theological differences will be reflected.
As well as acknowledging the will of God, the lordship of Jesus is also proclaimed in a protestant service.
However, here is a general breakdown:

  • The procession:  Groom, best man and officiator stand in the opening of the church and a procession begins in this order:
    • groomsmen
    • bridesmaids
    • maid of honour
    • flower girl
    • ring bearer
    • bride and her father
  • Greeting to the congregation
  • Readings
  • Exchange vows and rings
  • Final blessing
  • Recession ... In order:
    • bride and groom
    •  flower girl / ring bearer
    •  groomsmen / bridesmaids
    •  parents of the bride
    •  parents of the groom.

*Please note that certain weddings of various faiths or types, may require another additional ceremony (register office will suffice), to make it legal in western society.  Check with your officiator for confirmation.
